Fern English + Barista (Coffee) Package

From small seaside towns to large cities, the café culture is vibrant in New Zealand and there is rarely a place to eat without the smell of roasted coffee and the sound of an espresso machine. This intensive course will equip you with the practical skills you need to be able to confidently produce a café style cup of coffee, tea or fruit smoothie allowing you to gain part-time employment while you study or travel.

Programme Structure

The Fern English + Barista Package is structured to help you to develop English language skills at any level while you gain practical barista training.

This package includes four weeks of Intensive General English. In the fourth week of study you will also attend specialised classes in barista training in the afternoon.  

The Intensive General English programme has five key sections:

  1. Grammar / Vocabulary
    Improve the range and accuracy of grammatical structures and vocabulary
  2. Listening
    Improve general and specific comprehension
  3. Speaking
    Work on all aspects of fluency, pronunciation and appropriate usage
  4. Reading
    Increase speed, accuracy and comprehension
  5. Writing
    Focus on structure and organisation, correct register, summarising and paraphrasing

The internationally recognised City & Guilds Barista qualification is a half theory and half practical course which will provide you with:

  • An understanding of the origins of coffee
  • Knowledge of different coffee varieties
  • An understanding of how coffee is produced and processed
  • Knowledge of terminology used in the coffee industry
  • Practical experience in preparing and presenting espresso-based beverages
  • Practical experience in preparing and presenting tea and speciality teas
  • Practical experience in preparing and presenting fruit based smoothies
  • Knowledge of espresso equipment, techniques and recipes for preparing espresso beverages
  • Experience and practical knowledge of how to prepare and present filtered and pressed coffee

On successful completion of this package students will gain the City & Guilds International Award in Barista Skills.

Programme Duration
  • 4 week package
  • Starts the first Monday of every month, except in December  or on Public Holidays (where the course will start the next working day)

The package includes:

    • Three weeks Intensive General English study (20 hours per week) AND
    • One week Intensive General English (20 hours) plus City & Guilds International Award in Barista Skills (20 hours)

The City & Guilds International Award in Barista Skills can also be studied as a stand-alone programme (one week, 20 hours per week).

Entry Requirements

Students must:

  • be 16 years of age or older
  • meet the required level of English (IELTS 5.0/TOEFL 475) OR
  • achieve the required level in the English language placement test administered at NZMA
  • hold a valid visa and insurance
