The students at Fern were recently treated to a day of thrills, spills and high adventure.

In what was described by many of them as “the best outing ever”, 45 students and seven tutors spent the day trying their hand at everything from kayaking, orienteering and archery to raft building and wall climbing.  The exciting activities are amongst the offerings at the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre in Auckland’s Long Bay.

“I picked the Sir Peter Blake Centre as one of our summer outdoor activities as I wanted the students to experience the Kiwi way of having fun as well as giving them the opportunity to bond and work together in team activities,” says Fern/NZMA Activities Coordinator Sandra de Freitas.

“This was the first time we have taken a trip to this centre – but it definitely won’t be the last as everybody had such a fabulous time!

“Many of the activities were a first for most of our students, so it was a real learning curve for them, especially in terms of learning to trust their team members.  The instructors were excellent – very professional and safety conscious and they pitched their language at the right level for our students’ English ability.  All in all, it was an absolutely brilliant day!”
